Clinical Ethics In Christian Interventions is the second in a series of seminars for professional counselors of the Christian faith. Our goal is to equip the counselor through an overview and self-assessment of professional ethics as we address the responsibility to protect the client and do no harm.  As Christians our adherence to the Great Commandment  amplifies our responsibility and offers clarity to professional standards, acceptable practice, and clinical intervention.

  Clinical Ethics in Christian Interventions

Typical schedule:

8:00  Registration and light breakfast

8:30 Ethical decision making

   What is the ethic of clinical practice and Christian discipline?  What are the guidelines we use to make ethical decisions?   What are the priorities we choose, and how do we determine priority?

10:30  Break

10:45  Christian interventions in clinical treatment

     a. How do we choose Christian interventions consistent with clinical standards of practice?  What are our resources for establishing good practice when using Christian interventions?  

 b. What are the purposes of using prayer as a clinical intervention?  When is it appropriate and not appropriate?

 c.  What are some of the ethical issues we face in working with "pathological religion"? 

12:00  Lunch  provided by Marie Joseph Center

1:00  Ethical challenges in dealing with sexuality and intimate relationships

 a. What is the ethic for decision of the therapist dealing with sexuality?

 b. What are the ethical issues that arise in working with a homosexual or transsexual client?   What is good standard of practice?

2:30  Break

 c.  What are the ethical issues that arise in working with intimate heterosexual relationships?  What are good standards of practice? 

 4:00  Closing

 6 contact hours are available through Sunrise Seminars. Recommended readings before the seminar  include the AACC code of Ethics (available on the AACC website) and the professional ethics of your licensing board.

About the Presenters:

Dr. Denis T. Noonan III, D. Min

     Dr. Noonan has been a Licensed Pastoral Counselor in Maine since 1992 and a Pastor and counselor since 1976 in Castine, Bucksport, Belfast, Bangor, and Portland.  In addition to being a member of the Maine Board of Professional Counselors Licensure from 1994-2002, he is a Diplomat of the American Association of Pastoral  Counselors.  Denis is listed in the Christian Care Network of the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Dr. Doug Sholl, LMFT
     Doug Sholl  practices marriage and family therapy at Wellspring Health Center, a whole person health program providing medical and counseling services located in southern Maine.  He is also an ordained pastor who has developed a professional ethics training program for church leaders.  Doug helped to set up a peer supervision network for Christian therapists in Maine.  His vision for counseling is closely tied to the local church as an edifying and empowering community of  believers who are real servants in love with Jesus. Doug and his wife, Betsy, lead marriage growth and healing retreats in New England. Doug is a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists and a Charter member of the American Association of  Christian Counselors, as well as a Certified Criminal Justice Specialist and a Masters Addiction Counselor (NAFC).

Dr. Karen Westerman, PHD

    Karen is a licensed psychologist in private practice  with over thirty years of  experience.  She served as Director of Counseling at two Maine agencies, Crossroads and Day One where she developed and /or supervised a variety of treatment programs and modalities including residential, individual and group counseling, psycho-education, and family therapy.  After attending the Johnson Institute Karen brought her expertise back to Maine and trained colleagues and clergy in substance abuse intervention strategies.  Dr. Westerman has taught graduate and undergraduate counseling courses including those at Bishop Barham Divinity School in Uganda where she also served as chaplain of the college chapel during a four year missionary term. Her most recent project has been to help the Lawyer and Judge Assistance Program in Maine launch their support group program.
