The ethics of contradicting values

When deeply held values or perceptions of reality are presented in conflict, the therapist and client are engaged in an ethical dilemma. Social issue, political conviction, faith perspective, cultural tradition, or professional practice are some arenas where contradicting values present dilemmas for clinical and personal consideration. The therapeutic process often presents an intervention that invites the client to make a choice between two contradicting values. The therapist may also address client concerns and behaviors that contradict personal values. Couple and Family treatment assist the struggle to resolve contradicting values. The ethical foundations of interventions, clinical decisions, and family systems will be the focus of this four-hour ethics workshop. Theory and practice of ethics process will be presented in a format of didactic dialogue, case consultation, and spiritual assessment.

Goals: Participants will be able to:

   1. Identify clear values of client concerns
   2. Value the integrity of the position held
   3. Clarify the contradiction of values
   4. Explore the basis for honoring each value
   6. Consider the spiritual integrity of contradictory positions
Explain ethical considerations of decisions and interventions.
